Ingrown toenails like to dig deep, causing pain and complications. Our podiatrists, Dr. William C. Stoll, D.P.M., Dr. Dwayne A. Lay, D.P.M. and Dr. Daalia M. Jones, D.P.M., can treat this condition at the Atlanta Foot Care Center where we can be reached at (404) 355-4522, and are located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ingrown Toenails form as the side of the toenail digs into the skin surrounding it. This causes inflammation and discomfort.  This can happen by incorrectly trimming toenails, wearing the wrong type of footwear, and not changing socks when damp.

Symptoms include:

  • Severe discomfort
  • Swelling around the ingrown nail
  • A discharge from the area surrounding the nail if it becomes infected

This condition can be caused by any of the following factors:

  • An inherited defect
  • Severe trauma to the toes from blunt force
  • Toenails that are cut too short
  • Improperly fitting shoes that are too narrow around the toes
  • Fungal infections

Preventative measures include wearing sandals, that allow the toes to move freely, and wide toe-boxed shoes that have extra padding ensuring unnecessary friction. Treatment for this condition includes soaking the toes with the ingrown toenail condition in warm water which will act to unstiffen the area around the toenail and will help to prevent irregular cutting. Furthermore, if the above-described methods do not alleviate this condition, surgical procedures may become necessary. In certain instances, the nail may need to be removed completely.

Due to the complications associated with this condition, please contact us if you have any of the symptoms associated with this ailment to prevent the formation of any unnecessary infections.
